FAQs

I am in my first trimester and some spas will not allow massage until the second trimester. Is massage safe during the first trimester?

Yes, as long as you are not having complications, medical concerns, or have had high risk pregnancies in the past. You should always inform your massage therapist if you suspect you are pregnant even in cases where service will be declined because certain deep techniques should never be performed and some areas avoided entirely during pregnancy in order to avoid any harm to your baby or yourself. Lavande requires all therapists performing pre-natal massage be knowledgeable in pre-natal massage positioning, techniques, and contraindications. Lavande does perform pre-natal massage throughout your entire pregnancy as long as a written doctor's approval is given.

I heard that it is dangerous to have your feet massaged because of pressure points associated with labor?

There are acupressure points on both sides of the ankles that are associated with the uterus and ovaries and if aggressively stimulated have been shown to increase the likely hood of contractions. These areas do not need to be avoid entirely; foot massage and joint mobilization can help relieve joint swelling/pressure and muscular pain.

Is it safe to receive massage up to my due date?

In most cases, yes. A massage is a great way to prepare your body for childbirth. You should always consult your physician with any concerns and keep both your therapist and doctor informed of any changes to your health.

How often should I receive massage during my pregnancy?

If you are intending on massage being an integral part of your pre-natal care we recommend once a month during your first trimester and twice a month during your second and third trimesters.

Is aromatherapy safe during pregnancy?

Most essential oils are contraindicated throughout pregnancy. However there are a few that are safe and beneficial during pregnancy when used correctly. A recent randomized controlled trial found that women during pregnancy who received a 2% lavender essential oil aromatherapy massage twice a month had lower stress hormones (Cortisol) and higher IgA levels (Immunoglobulin A, an antibody) then those in the control group.

Do you use any type of pregnancy pillow?

Lying prone (face down) is not recommended once your belly is beyond the protection of your hip bones around 8-12 weeks. Lavande does have the option for clients to use the bodyCushion pregnancy bolsters in order to lie prone past their first trimester. However Lavande requires a doctor's written approval prior to any pre-natal service and if you wish to use the bodyCushion the doctor's note must state so and at which week side lying/semi-reclined is required. Lavande requires all clients past the 20th week to switch to side lying &/or semi-reclined.

After delivery pregnancy cushions may be helpful when lying prone if a you are breastfeeding or have had a cesarean. Please request pregnancy cushions during booking.

If I am on bed-rest if pre-natal massage safe?

If you are on bed-rest, Lavande does require an additional written doctor's approval. Not all conditions that require bed-rest are contraindicated with massage. If you currently have pre-eclampsia, massage may be preformed with a doctor's permission. However, if you have been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombois (DVT) or any placenta problems (ie. previa, accreta, or abruption) any massage services will need to be postponed.

How soon after delivery can I receive massage?

Lavande does require 4-6 weeks for recovery time before massage services can be performed. Prior to that a written doctor's approval is necessary.
